Fertilizer from urine festival visitors
Alcohol in the urine? That is no objection. Urine is filled with nitrogen and phosphate, useful substances, which do just fine as fertilizer in agriculture.
During the Nijmegen ‘99th Four Days Marches event‘, all visitors will be invited to pee not in nature or against churches on special toilets. For 7 days their urine will be collected.
The goal: reuse the huge pool as fertilizer for the growth and development of vegetables and plants.

“This development is still in its infancy,” says Bart Wicherink, manager of GMB Bioenergy in Zutphen. The company collects the urine of the party heroes.

Pee Crosses
The urine collection is fairly straightforward. The 81 puddle pee-crosses have been connected.
The organization expects to collect about a quarter million liter of pee.
The storage tank holds 50,000 liters which will go by tankers to the urine processing plant SaNiPhos GMB BioEnergy in Zutphen.
Here, nitrogen and phosphate are removed from the urine. This results in struvite, an alternative fertilizer for agriculture.
Festival goers in Denmark are being encouraged to donate their urine to assist in the production of beer by local farmers

This ‘Four Days Marches event‘ is not the first event that occurs in urine recycling. Pinkpop and Lowlands have been experimenting and the largest fair of Europe, the Tilburg Fair, has been collecting urine for three years now.
The Danish festival Roskilde says that the collected urine is used for the planting of new hop fields: the production of the beer festival.
