These programs serve SCE’s residential, commercial and industrial customers who, in exchange for bill reductions, have agreed to reduce their energy consumption when called upon to do so and in that way ease the stress on the electric system, especially in times of peak power demand.

Southern California Edison (SCE) announced the integration of an estimated 1,118 megawatts of demand response resources into California’s wholesale energy markets.

And 320,000 customers have agreed to join.

Smart grids

Demand response resources are most useful during peak periods of energy consumption, such as hot summer days, to meet unexpectedly high electricity demand or to help alleviate stress on the grid during emergency conditions.

As Americans today use more electronic devices than ever, the demand for power continues to grow rapidly. Without Smart Grid improvements, the old system, already strained to near-capacity, will be unable to meet the challenges of the future.

The 1,118 megawatts of demand response exceeds the capacity of most of the state’s large electric generating plants and is made up of the aggregation of more than 320,000 SCE customers participating in demand response programs.

Peak demand reduction

The full integration of SCE’s demand response portfolio will result in a more efficient energy market for California and increased reliability for all customers. Revenue generated by this participation in the markets will help offset the prices that customers pay for power bought on their behalf by the utility.

In advance, president Obama makes up to a billion dollars in loan guarantees availabl,e to support commercial-scale distributed energy projects, such as rooftop solar with storage and smart grid technology.
