COP21 – 1.5 degrees? Only with CO2 storage and fossil-free by 2030
While the political will is increased to limit the global warming at 1.5 degrees, scientists point on the technical challenge.
CO2 storage is needed and the world must be fossil free by 2030, say scientists.
At an event on the sidelines of the climate summit, focussing on CO2 emissions in 2015, scientists are warning 1.5 degrees warming will be difficult.
It requires a total phase-out of fossil fuel use worldwide by 2025-30 (…) followed by large-scale use of negative emissions technology’ said Glen Peters of research at CICERO Climate Home. Nowadays, 2050 is often cited as the moment that the world should be able to be without fossil fuels. It seems almost impossible to bring that date brought 20 to 25 years forward.
You would be shutting down coal power plants everywhere, you would be retiring oil everywhere, there would not be any place for gas. Personally, I think if you look at progress in the negotiations, if you look at [national climate plans], you would have to say 1.5C has an extremely slim chance.
According to Peters: with the plans submitted before the climate, it’s not even sure that the CO2 emissions will stop growing after 2030.
‘On this track, emissions may not even peak by 2030, let alone reach zero as needed for 1.5C.’
The Dutch climate expert Leo Meijer has announced that without CO2 storage, warming will be more than 1.5 degrees. 1.5 degree is only feasible if we take CO2 from the air and store it underground. Alternatives to remain at 1.5 degree are no longer realistic.
