Bacteria from Siberian soda lake makes gas without CO2

Sorokin at work in Siberia. ‘The white stuff is not snow – it is called trona, a mineral consisting from two forms of soda – NaHCO3 and Na2CO3.

Researchers from Delft and Moscow have discovered a new class of micro organisms in Siberian soda. These organisms grow in saturated soda and convert organic materials into methane gas.

Together with colleagues from US, UK, Germany and Spain, they have published their findings in Nature Microbiology. Read More

They listed four actions that could result in substantial decreases in an individual’s carbon footprint:

  1. eating a plant-based diet
  2. avoiding air travel
  3. living car free
  4. having smaller families

For example, living car-free saves about 2.4 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year, while eating a plant-based diet saves 0.8 tonnes of CO2 equivalent a year. Read More

In 1989, the organization changed the design of a drilling platform in order to take account of extreme weather and rising sea levels.

Shell produced a report on global warming called ‘Climate of Concern’ in 1986. In 1991 they made the video documentary for the public. It warned that trends in global temperatures raised serious risks of famines, floods and climate refugees.

But in the quarter century since, Shell has continued to invest heavily in fossil fuels. 

Already in the eighties, Shell understood that climate change would affect its own operations. In 1989, the organization changed the design of a drilling platform in order to take account of extreme weather and rising sea levels.

The CO2 recycling process should allow ArcelorMittal Belgium to produce 60 million liters of biofuel and reduce its carbon emissions. Annually!

The world bank published the figures in a report. Globally, over 16,000 oil wells are flaring gas.

The amount of wasted gas corresponds to the gas consumption of the UK, Germany and Switzerland together. If the gas was burned in a power plant, it could supply the whole of Africa with electricity. Read More

“LADWP is on the verge of making significant investments in its infrastructure, and with that 100-year-old power system in need of significant upgrades, the city has an opportunity to re-create its utility in a way that recognizes the potential for a fossil-free future, demonstrates global leadership in its commitment to clean energy, and protects ratepayers from the increasing costs of carbon-based fuels.”

Norway climate neutral 2030

Norway plans carbon neutral by 2030

Lawmakers have voted for Norway, a major energy-producing nation, to become carbon-neutral by 2030, two decades ahead of schedule, as a result of the UN’s December 2015 climate accord.

Norway wants to become climate neutral by 2030. The Norwegan Parliament approved radical proposals to cut carbon emissions. This new Norwegan goal is set 20 years earlier than planned. 

Last tuesday night, the parliament voted for an accelerated programme of CO2 cuts and carbon trading to offset emissions from sectors such as Norway’s oil and gas industries, which are unlikely to be phased out in the near future.

An Energy Hub in the middle of the North Sea? Tennet launched a vision building an island as a hub, for wind power in the middle of the North Sea which will provide all neighboring countries green energy.

By connecting wind farms with a total capacity of over 30 gigawatts, the efficiency and costs will benefit the participating countries.

This plan was presented by TenneT last week. TenneT is the national high-voltage grid operator in the Netherlands and in a part of Germany. Read More
