SolarPlane enters Space

SolarPlane enters Space

The entire round trip is expected to take five hours.

In 2018, the first SolarPlane will be launched into Space. Founder Raphaël Domjan has been supported for this amazing project through crowdfunding, and they have a host of partners on board, including Ciel Électricité, Zvezda and Fischer Connectors.

Dormjan: “It seems to me that it is necessary to go even further and overtake what has been achieved with fossil fuels.”

The project is called ‘Mission SolarStratos’. The aim of this so-called eco-adventure is to send an 8.5m long and 24.9m wide solar-powered plane, 15 minutes into space and back. Read More

Storage Prices Dropping

McKinsey research energy storage

Storage can benefit utilities by helping them to address the challenges of planning and operating the grid in markets where loads are expected to be flat or falling.

Storage prices are dropping much faster than anyone expected, according to McKinsey.

Energy battery prices are falling rapidly, allowing new combinations of solar, wind, and energy storage to “outcompete” the costs of coal and natural gas plants.

Promising step in nuclear fusion research

Promising step in nuclear fusion research

The new wall of liquid metal appeared to remain cooler and is capable of repairing itself constantly

A layer of liquid metal may be the anwer to the temperature problem of nuclear fusion. An important obstacle which had to be solved is that the reactor wall is resistant to extremely high temperatures released during power generation.
In Nature Communications, Dutch scientists published a breakthrough for this problem. They discovered that the wall of a reactor can be protected with a thin layer of liquid metal.

Blockchain technology for Microgrids

Blockchain technology

At its core, blockchain technology is a way to transfer any kind of data or information in a fast, tracked, and secure way without the need for an intermediary institution. Initially developed to allow peers to directly exchange digital currency faster and at lower cost, blockchain is now yielding a variety of promising new solutions beyond financial services.

The blockchain technology has attracted public interest as it provides an effective instrument to satisfy the needs of people to cooperate horizontally with each other in economic and social spheres like energy microgrids.

Blockchain technology is an innovative method of storing and validating data that permits direct transactions between energy producers and consumers.

BioBased Material 20% Better Insulation

To decrease our energy and water consumption, we should pay more attention to a better insulation of our houses, offices and community buildings.

Of course we know all the classic insulation materials. But using BioBased insulation materials do have a lot of advantages: Read More

A complete circular building

Thomas Rau created a real circular building

Circular building is more than reusing the existing structure. All added materials, such as the concrete tiles, furniture and the insulation material, are recycled products and materials.

How do you give four dated bunched offices a second life without wasting material? Simple: build circular.

Energy Company Liander did it.

We have seen it. And it’s an amazing ‘new’ future proof and circular building. Read More

Facade System allows building to ‘breathe’

Facade System allows building to 'breathe'

how to keep the climate comfortable in buildings, without energy-intensive installations

Do you also have dry eyes and headaches in your office building? This new Facade System allows a building to ‘breathe’. Tobias Becker used biomimicry for a pleasant indoor climate.

German innovation

The German engineer Ing. Tobias Becker has developed a glass facade system that requires minimal energy to generate a pleasant indoor climate. The system allows air through holes and makes buildings ‘breathe’. Read More

Shell moving towards Green?

Shell moving towards Green?

Shell has been operating in wind energy with 9 projects in North America and Europa, together 500MW of installed capacity.

Last May, Shell launched a new division for renewable energy, Martin Wetselaar, now responsible for integrated gas (including LNG), will lead the division ‘New Energy‘. Is Shell moving towards renewables?

The new division will be transferred to the existing activities in hydrogen, biofuels and renewable power generation. It will also be used as a basis for new activities in wind energy. Read More

Flexible Flood Barrier

flood barrier

This multi functional flood barrier offers the ability to change the height of the flood barrier.

This is a great low cost, green and rapid solution for a new river barrier.

The UK suffered from floods in 2014. Neptune has an answer to it.

This barrier does not have to be knocked down and rebuilt. Its height can easily be increased on site responding to any unexpected increase in sea levels whenever they might occur. Read More

Bacteria instead of Lithium?

Bacteria battery by Sam Molenaar

Sam Molenaar believes that, with further optimization, the bacteria-based battery could rival the performance of lithium-ion batteries at a lower cost and with greater safety.

A rechargeable battery driven by bacteria? Lithium-ion batteries are limited by safety issues, high costs and other factors. Sam Molenaar and his colleagues from Wageningen University wanted to come up with a less expensive, more sustainable solution.

The research team combined two separate microbial energy systems. One system used bacteria to form acetate from electricity, while the other one converted the produced acetate back into electricity. Read More

Fusion energy breakthrough

Fusion done by quantum tunneling

Fusion proces: Because of a phenomenon known as quantum tunneling, the hydrogen atoms smash into each other and fuse into helium.

Is Fusion the answer for the new energy world? Scientists create hydrogen plasma, what the sun is made of.

Max Planck researchers finally succeeded in building this breakthrough reactor. And for the first time, the scientists have successfully created hydrogen plasma, the key component to nuclear fusion, and held it in a contained environment. Read More

The United States is the greatest risk, CarbonTracker states, with a cost of $ 412 billion in stranded assets “unnecessary fossil projects in 2025.
Second in risk is Canada (220 billion). Than China (179 million), Russia (147 billion ) and Australia (US $ 103 billion).

The next decade fossil energy companies will lose possibly $ 2.2 trillion in investments, according CarbonTracker in a recent report.

The money will be lost in a low carbon future.

Global action on climate change and renewable energy investments will ensure the waste for fossil energy companies. Research was done at the current and future projects from oil, gas and coal companies until 2025. It concluded which projects would stop because of political actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to below two degrees global warming.
