EMBATT Car Battery stretches range to 1,000 km

EMBATT Car Battery stretches range to 1,000 km

EMBATT is a new type of battery with less components and a much simpler design that would free up space that could be used to provide extra electricity storage capacity.

The EMBATT car battery, developed by the German Fraunhofer Institute and partners, could give cars a range of 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) in the medium term without taking up more space or weight.

So far EMBATT has been confined to the laboratory, but the partners are working on scaling up the technology for installation in test vehicles by 2020. Read More

Irena: CO2-free Energy possible

Irena: CO2-free Energy possible

Renewable energy now accounts for 24% of global power generation and 16% of primary energy supply. To achieve decarbonisation, the report states that, by 2050, renewables should be 80% of power generation and 65% of total primary energy supply.

Irena (International Renewable Energy Agency) concluded in a new study that is possible to produce CO2-free global energy in 2060. According to Irena, by 2050 it would by possible to decrease emissions by 70%.

From a press release by IRENA

‘(…) Global energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions can be reduced by 70% by 2050 and completely phased-out by 2060 with a net positive economic outlook, according to new findings released today by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). Perspectives for the Energy Transition: Investment Needs for a Low-Carbon Energy Transition, launched on the occasion of the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue, presents the case that increased deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency in G20 countries and globally can achieve the emissions reductions needed to keep global temperature rise to no more than two-degrees Celsius, avoiding the most severe impacts of climate change.

The Gravity Battery Concept

solar power will increase by 80% the next 3 years

Green power: Global investments reached USD 300 billion. A relatively large proportion of these billions has been done by emerging countries such as Burundi, Kenya, Honduras, Jordan and Uruguay.

A gravity battery could be created by using an energy source to slowly lift a large weight (using gearing or pulleys), then discharged by lowering the weight to run a generator when needed.

The gravity battery consists a tube, weight, cable and coil. When the weight is up, the battery is considered charged. Read More

Battery 2nd Life project

Vattenfall: Our stated goal is to integrate this battery storage facility into the energy system and to give a large number of similar small local facilities access to the market through electricity trading

2nd Life project with used BMW batteries for balancing the grid. Vattenfall, BMW and Bosch test electricity storage with repurposed EV batteries in Hamburg.

  • 2,600 used battery modules from over 100 electric vehicles are being merged to form a large electricity storage facility in Hamburg
  • The stored energy is available within seconds and can help to keep the electricity grid stable

Cordelia Thielitz, General Manager Bosch Energy Storage Solutions: Electricity storage systems are a key success factor for the new energy landscape.

Can we repurpose EV batteries?

 Can we repurpose EV batteries?

V-Storage started a pilot using old batteries from busses as an energy storage system. The ‘old’ batteries are placed in a large container. They intent to use the stored energy to electrify busses and to increase the Grid Balance. The pilot will start in January 2017.

In four or five years, the batteries in the roughly one and a quarter million EVs currently on the road are going to start to wane. EV owners will either replace them, or replace the cars entirely.

That means we’ll have a lot of used batteries (with plenty of life left in them) but which are no longer suitable for EVs. What to do?

One possibility is repurposing them to serve as grid-connected energy storage.

Storage is valuable to the grid for many reasons, including its ability to smooth out fluctuations in supply, allowing for more integration of variable renewable energy. Read More

SheerWind Invelox windtube

SheerWind Invelox windtube

This system of capturing, concentrating, accelerating, and harvesting wind power in a funnel is a patented system we call INVELOX™

The SheerWind technology seems to be a cost-effective, high-performance alternative to conventional wind technology. Look at this trending new wind turbine.

According to Dr. Daryoush Allaei, founder of SheerWind, the industry is looking at the problem the wrong way.

Current wind turbines are really only an optimized step beyond the old sail based windmills of Europe, passively waiting for the appropriate wind. Read More

India connects 360 MW solar to the grid

India connected 360 MW solar to the grid

Adani Group, the India-headquartered industry, has connected half of the solar power plant to the grid. Location: Tamil, India

Half of the largest solar park in India is now connected to the national grid. The plant is located near Kamuthi in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

ABB announced that it commissioned five substations to connect the 648 MW solar park.

Of the total 648 MW of capacity, 360 MW is now connected to the grid. Read More

Orison plug and play home battery system

Orison plug and play home battery system

Orison’s plug in home battery could help homeowners ditch the grid by connecting to an alternative energy source like solar or wind and saving money because of low rate energy prices

The new Orison plug and play home battery system, stores electricity when electricity rates are low, so the electricity can be used later to avoid paying the higher rates.

Best of all: this new system requires no installation like other home battery setups; you just plug it in and away you go. Read More

Wind Power Hub North Sea

Wind Power Hub North Sea

TenneT’s thinking is based on an island with a modular structure, with each module covering approximately 6 km². This is big enough to provide space for connecting roughly 30 GW of offshore wind capacity. The island will be expandable by adding one or two modules of 6 km² each

An Energy Hub in the middle of the North Sea? Tennet launched a vision building an island as a hub, for wind power in the middle of the North Sea which will provide all neighboring countries green energy.

By connecting wind farms with a total capacity of over 30 gigawatts, the efficiency and costs will benefit the participating countries.

This plan was presented by TenneT last week. TenneT is the national high-voltage grid operator in the Netherlands and in a part of Germany. Read More
