 Can we repurpose EV batteries?

V-Storage started a pilot using old batteries from busses as an energy storage system. The ‘old’ batteries are placed in a large container. They intent to use the stored energy to electrify busses and to increase the Grid Balance. The pilot will start in January 2017.

In four or five years, the batteries in the roughly one and a quarter million EVs currently on the road are going to start to wane. EV owners will either replace them, or replace the cars entirely.

That means we’ll have a lot of used batteries (with plenty of life left in them) but which are no longer suitable for EVs. What to do?

One possibility is repurposing them to serve as grid-connected energy storage.

Storage is valuable to the grid for many reasons, including its ability to smooth out fluctuations in supply, allowing for more integration of variable renewable energy. Read More

An Energy Hub in the middle of the North Sea? Tennet launched a vision building an island as a hub, for wind power in the middle of the North Sea which will provide all neighboring countries green energy.

By connecting wind farms with a total capacity of over 30 gigawatts, the efficiency and costs will benefit the participating countries.

The application proposed a $2.4 billion spending increase through 2016, of which $1 billion would go toward making the grid more resilient to future storms and flooding.

The short-term $1 billion resiliency plan, is the first step in what is expected to be the USA’s most extensive effort to climate-proof an electric grid. The Con Edison (power supplier) plan involves:

  • floodwalls around substations and transformers to help prevent storm water from swallowing and frying the equipment
  • strengthen poles to withstand thrashing winds, move many high-voltage power lines underground
  • install back-up fuel supply systems to prevent soaring demand during heat waves from crashing the grid
