The Gravity Battery Concept

solar power will increase by 80% the next 3 years

Green power: Global investments reached USD 300 billion. A relatively large proportion of these billions has been done by emerging countries such as Burundi, Kenya, Honduras, Jordan and Uruguay.

A gravity battery could be created by using an energy source to slowly lift a large weight (using gearing or pulleys), then discharged by lowering the weight to run a generator when needed.

The gravity battery consists a tube, weight, cable and coil. When the weight is up, the battery is considered charged. Read More

Can we repurpose EV batteries?

 Can we repurpose EV batteries?

V-Storage started a pilot using old batteries from busses as an energy storage system. The ‘old’ batteries are placed in a large container. They intent to use the stored energy to electrify busses and to increase the Grid Balance. The pilot will start in January 2017.

In four or five years, the batteries in the roughly one and a quarter million EVs currently on the road are going to start to wane. EV owners will either replace them, or replace the cars entirely.

That means we’ll have a lot of used batteries (with plenty of life left in them) but which are no longer suitable for EVs. What to do?

One possibility is repurposing them to serve as grid-connected energy storage.

Storage is valuable to the grid for many reasons, including its ability to smooth out fluctuations in supply, allowing for more integration of variable renewable energy. Read More

Wind Power Hub North Sea

Wind Power Hub North Sea

TenneT’s thinking is based on an island with a modular structure, with each module covering approximately 6 km². This is big enough to provide space for connecting roughly 30 GW of offshore wind capacity. The island will be expandable by adding one or two modules of 6 km² each

An Energy Hub in the middle of the North Sea? Tennet launched a vision building an island as a hub, for wind power in the middle of the North Sea which will provide all neighboring countries green energy.

By connecting wind farms with a total capacity of over 30 gigawatts, the efficiency and costs will benefit the participating countries.

This plan was presented by TenneT last week. TenneT is the national high-voltage grid operator in the Netherlands and in a part of Germany. Read More

US Energy Storage Update

US energy storage plants

Tehachapi is nominally a wind energy-related project attached to the 4.5 GW.
When it opened, in September 2014, it was credited with being the largest battery storage project in the North of the US, with 604,832 Li-ion cells housed in 10,872 modules.

This blog focuses on the Borrego Springs, Tehachapiand and Notrees energy storage projects and examines the long-term impact that they will have on the future project pipeline in the US.

According to the Energy Storage Association’s US Energy Storage Monitor, 60.3 MW of storage was deployed in the third quarter of 2015, a twofold year-on-year increase.

Glider as Energy Turbine

Glider as Energy Turbine

Airbourne wind energy to the world’s energy mix

This glider, called the ‘PowerPlane’ is a green energy turbine that extracts energy from the wind much more economically than conventional wind turbines.

PowerPlane systems convert wind power into mechanical power by having an autopilot-controlled glider plane creating pull on a tether by flying repetitive cross-wind patterns at an altitude of 300 to 600 meters. Read More

EU Grid for renewables

EU Grid

Interconnections are necessary to ensure the continued security of supply in the European electricity market and to secure the the supply of renewable electricity between European Countries.

The EU (European) Grid for renewables is connecting more and more countries. At this moment an interconnector is build from the Netherlands to Germany.

The Dutch Grid company TenneT uses a new proprietary ‘Wintrack Mast’. This ‘Wintrack Mast’ has a much smaller electromagnetic field than conventional masts and – because of its sleek design – it fits better in the living environment. Read More

Supersonic plane on hydrogen

Airbus, hydrogen, electricity, renewables, plane, airplane, patent

The plane reduces the noise of the sonic boom — a loud bang caused by shockwaves created by an object moving faster than the speed of sound.
“This noise has been the main limit, if not the only one, preventing the opening of lines other than transatlantic ones for the Concorde aircraft,” the patent says.
The plane does that by being “near-vertical,” like a rocket, while ramping up to supersonic speed and its cruising altitude of 30,000 to 35,000 meters — 20 kilometers higher than conventional commercial aircraft.

Airbus has received a patent for a design of a supersonic passenger plane on hydrogen. Thanks to ultra-modern engines, the airplane can achieve speeds over 5,500 mph.

The granted patent discloses an apparatus which is provided with delta-shaped wings, provided with three different types of engines:

  1. turbojets for taxiing, takeoff and landing
  2. a rocket motor for rapid acceleration
  3. ramjets for high-altitude cruising

The plane will be fueled by hydrogen and liquid oxygen. Read More

Increased solar power threatens energy companies

climate change, solar power, sustainable, emission, thin film, concentrate solar, electricity, renewable energy, organic solar

Energy companies need flexible plants that can quickly respond to peaks in demand and supply

Because of the growth in the number of solar panels in Europe, Energy Companies have to consider new business models.

Strategy consultant Berger:
‘By 2030, solar power will supply half of the peak demands for energy.’

The fact that more and more consumers produce their own power, is forcing energy companies to think about their future. On sunny days Europe scores enormous energy surpluses. This distorts the market for energy companies. They feel the impact of solar energy and therefore must adjust their operations. Read More

Floating railway will store 10% of Dutch electricity

green energy, storage, electricity, solar, wind, kinetic, ECN, grid

This ‘energy train’ energy storage system, enables 2.5 gigawatts of electricity to be stored for an eight-hour period or 400 megawatts for 48 hours.

The energy storage market is blossoming. Because we need renewable energy storage to supply our smart electrical grids at daily moments the demand for energy is high.

In a few years, a huge underground floating railway will store 10% of the Netherlands’ daily energy.

The energy storage costs will be 10% of the normal costs.

The energy ‘train’ storage system will compensate Dutch peaks and troughs in the supply and demand of green energy like wind and solar.
