First all-electric autonomous container ship

The ship will ensure a major reduction in NOx and CO2 emissions as the company shifts its product transportation from what previously required 40,000 truck journeys a year to this new, all-electric shipping pathway.

Norwegian company Yara has teamed up with maritime technology company Kongsberg to build the world’s first all-electric and autonomous container ship, which is set to hit the high seas late in 2018.

The hi-tech container ship, named Yara Birkeland, will carry chemicals and fertilizer from Yara’s Prosgrunn production plant to the nearby towns of Brevik and Larvik.

It will first operate as a manned vessel in 2018

before transitioning to remote operation in 2019

This ferry the ‘Ampere’ is the first full electric Norwegian ferry. A study has shown that 127 of the 180 ferries could be driven using battery power or a hybrid propulsion system and still remain profitable.

Norway goes for all-electric cars by 2025. The country will ban all petrol cars.

The Progressive Party is well advanced in negotiations with coalition partners to reach agreement on it.

Norway plans carbon neutral by 2030

Lawmakers have voted for Norway, a major energy-producing nation, to become carbon-neutral by 2030, two decades ahead of schedule, as a result of the UN’s December 2015 climate accord.

Norway wants to become climate neutral by 2030. The Norwegan Parliament approved radical proposals to cut carbon emissions. This new Norwegan goal is set 20 years earlier than planned. 

Last tuesday night, the parliament voted for an accelerated programme of CO2 cuts and carbon trading to offset emissions from sectors such as Norway’s oil and gas industries, which are unlikely to be phased out in the near future.
