Wattway, part of the France Colas constructions company, announced that four SolarRoad pilots will be built around the world in 2017.
Bloomberg December 4th:
(…) Colas SA, a French engineering firm, has designed rugged solar panels, capable of withstanding the weight of an 18-wheeler truck, that they’re now building into road surfaces. After nearly five years of research and laboratory tests, they’re constructing 100 outdoor test sites and plan to commercialize the technology in early 2018. (…/) Read More
In the body of the study it becomes clear that FCVs do not beat internal combustion engines (ICEs) by much in equivalent fuel economy, And they are not much better in greenhouse gas emissions either, particularly in the liquid hydrogen versions, because of the energy required to transport and compress the hydrogen.
Hydrogen fuel cell cars appear to be making a comeback. But is this real? The comparison in question includes discussion of:
the wider process behind producing hydrogen fuel
the production itself
the transportation of the fuel
The future is a bit cloudy for hydrogen fuel cells (HFC), as electric vehicles have developed quickly and taken significant market share. Read More
Tehachapi is nominally a wind energy-related project attached to the 4.5 GW Tehachapi Wind Resource Area, although in actual fact the plant was conceived as a two-year test bed for a wide range of potential grid applications. When it opened, in September 2014, it was credited with being the largest battery storage project in the North of the US, with 604,832 Li-ion cells housed in 10,872 modules.
Everyone knows California and New York do have behind-the-meter energy storage at a large scale. But there are some sleeper states where the economics already work.
During reel-out, the kite is flying figure-eight maneuvers at high speed (70 to 90 km/h). This creates a high traction force (3.1 kN at 7 m/s wind speed) which is converted into electricity by the drum and the connected 20 kW generator.
Kite Power by harnessing high altitude wind next step in Dutch Icon project ‘Afsluitdijk’.
Even NASA has started to work on airborne wind energy. This field is very new and has much room for innovation.
Flight testing with actual consistent measured power production is the next step.
The City of Los Angeles took a significant step toward realizing its global leadership potential. Mayor Garcetti released LA’s first-ever urban sustainability plan: the pLAn.
LA City Council members Paul Krekorian and Mike Bonin coauthored legislation for a fast route to 100% renewables for LA. With an appreciative nod from the Sierra Club, the news reported at 11district.comfollows:
“LADWP is on the verge of making significant investments in its infrastructure, and with that 100-year-old power system in need of significant upgrades, the city has an opportunity to re-create its utility in a way that recognizes the potential for a fossil-free future, demonstrates global leadership in its commitment to clean energy, and protects ratepayers from the increasing costs of carbon-based fuels.”
Under the current plan, emissions are expected to drop. Under a new plan, they could drop to zero!
The battery is developed including high energy density thermochemical materials that can supply required heating, cooling and domestic hot water for a dwelling with up to 100% renewable energy sources (e.g. the sun) throughout the year. Read More
We have to rush to limit climate change and to seize the economic opportunities that the transition entails. This WindWheel has released an architecture design for the wind turbine of the future
10 challenges we should overcome in order to transform successfully to a sustainable, strong and secure green energy economy.
Buildings, transport, industry, ICT, user behavior, energy storage, solar energy, wind energy, bio-energy, CO2 capture and more … Energy is one of the biggest changes in this century and has many aspects.
We present to you the ten important and urgent challenges, summarized by NERA. Read More
Shell has been operating in wind energy with 9 projects in North America and Europa, together 500MW of installed capacity.
Last May, Shell launched a new division for renewable energy, Martin Wetselaar, now responsible for integrated gas (including LNG), will lead the division ‘New Energy‘. Is Shell moving towards renewables?
The new division will be transferred to the existing activities in hydrogen, biofuels and renewable power generation. It will also be used as a basis for new activities in wind energy. Read More
Last week the German government reported that the Portugal produced so much renewable energy on a particularly sunny, windy Sunday that there was a power surplus.
In may 2016, Portugal ran for more than half a week without having to resort to fossil fuels. Thanks to a big push toward solar, wind, and hydro power and a little nudge from the EU, for four days, Portugal produced enough clean, sustainable electricity to meet the needs of its people. Read More
This glider, called the ‘PowerPlane’ is a green energy turbine that extracts energy from the wind much more economically than conventional wind turbines.
PowerPlane systems convert wind power into mechanical power by having an autopilot-controlled glider plane creating pull on a tether by flying repetitive cross-wind patterns at an altitude of 300 to 600 meters. Read More
