Daan Roosegaarde introduces the Free Smog Tower: a 7 meters high tower that creates smog-free air in the area.

“It’s my job to look around, and find new proposals to solve global issues. I have been involved in fashion and highways. And since 2014, I am involved in smog.”

Daan Roosegaarde introduced the ambitious idea for the Free Smog Tower. He started a Kickstarter Project with the goal to built a 7 meters high tower in Rotterdam that creates smog-free air in the area.

Rotterdam

Starting in Rotterdam, Roosegaarde aims to help other polluted cities like Paris, Los Angeles, Mexico City and Beijing. Europe suffers with a lot of smog. The Netherlands has even introduced a smog alert. In Paris, people were encouraged to travel with free public transports (and leave their car at home).

The smog in Europe is invisible. Chinese smog is yellow because of the coal-particles  in the air. But the most dangerous smog particles are invisible, very small and most harmful because they penetrate deeper into the body.

In Beijing, there are children until their eighth in play because the air is too harmful. For me that was the eye-opener.

The tower sucks the dirty air and loads the smog particles with a positive charge. In the tower, a very large negatively charged surface attracts the particles, cleaning the air in a very safe and energy-efficient way.

How does it work?

Do your remember what happened when you rubbed your hand over a plastic balloon? It turned static.

The tower operates the same principle:

  • It sucks the dirty air
  • Loads the smog particles at nano level with a positive charge
  • In the tower, a very large negatively charged surface attracts the particles
  • Cleaning the air in a very safe and energy-efficient way
  • A bubble of clean air will be spitted out
  • And from the collected smog particles we will make and sell jewelry.

Movement

It is a local solution. The tower can not solve the smog problem of a whole city. Therefore that cities needs big decisions involving renewable energy, electric vehicles and awareness among citizens.

So this smog free tower is the start of a movement: A ‘Smog Free Movement’. Rotterdam is the first city. After that we hope to built in Paris, Mexico City, Los Angeles and Beijing. If my creations are able to trigger curiosity and involvement, I contribute to a better future

September 4th, the tower will be opened officially with crowd funders, press and mayors from all over the world. From September 5th, anyone can experience the clean air.
